Creation Audio Labs has developed cutting edge upgrades for the Soundcraft Ghost mixing console that greatly enhance all the sonic attributes of the desk while maintaining its British characteristics.

The factory original Ghost is a great console from the start. Soundcraft basically took R&D from their flagship consoles and more or less copied and pasted circuits into the Ghost with the goal of creating a budget friendly console. However, the Ghost mic pre was redesigned by a former NEVE engineer to give it Class-A biasing, and is heralded as one of the best sounding on-board console mic pres ever. Also, Graham Blythe, one of the co-founder of Soundcraft, redesigned the Ghost's EQ, to be the best sounding console EQ yet for Soundcraft.
For the Ghost to achieve its "budget friendly" goal, Soundcraft implemented these no-compromise circuit designs by using generic capacitors and IC chips, housed in a semi-modular console to reduce the cost. Semi-modular means the frame is formed with a single piece of sheet metal, 24 or 32 channel wide, but internally the individual channels are still on separate PCB's. This makes it possible to remove, service, and replace individual channels without the need to send off the entire console.
Soundcraft Ghost Mods

Our Modifications: We upgrade the generic capacitors to the newest, ultra-low impedance capacitors. This helps tighten up the overall phase response, making the high end smoother and more focused, while providing tight, punchy bass. We use the latest rail-to-rail opamps for increased headroom. These op amps, along with trimming the power supply, adds about 6V peak-to-peak headroom. In addition, the newest op amps use less power, have lower noise floor, lower distortion and better specs overall. The newest op amps also allow us to eliminate many additional capacitors throughout the signal path to further tighten up the phase response and improve the overall specs.
The capacitor and IC upgrades are enough to put this desk over the top. The mic pre’s, EQ section, the outputs, B-Mix path, direct output drivers, and aux sections all gain responsiveness and clarity. The noise floor of the desk drops significantly. The Left/Right stereo field widens out greatly due the improvement in crosstalk. Upgrading the capacitors improves low end clarity as well as tightening up the low-mid frequency response. The modified Ghost specs are, objectively measurable and subjectively arguable, the best specs on the planet. And, we've spec'd it against Neve's and SSL's.
The slide show above contains graphs showing improvements in THD+n, noise floor and stereo crosstalk. Click over the picture and a description will appear.

Creation Audio Labs can upgrade your entire console. Or, just individual channels as per your request. We recommend as a minimum, start with the master section and at least two input channels. This gives a complete stereo pathway through a pair of "cutting edge" channels and the masters.
During this process, we also perform a general refurb of the console, which is a complete strip down and rebuild of the desk. We address all problems, clean and lubricate components, re-solder pot and jack connections, etc. Please view the refurbishment / restoration section of our web page for a walk through of this process.
-
All metal work, knobs and PCB modules are cleaned with the appropriate chemicals / solutions / high pressure air.
-
All rearcon jack connections and all pot connections are resoldered by hand. This insures good connection to the PCB and corrects any solder fractures which cause "crackle" and intermittent drop outs.
-
All switches are cleaned and lubed.
-
All pots are cleaned with very expensive chemical cleaners and HP air.
-
All faders are cleaned and lubed, and the hot wire of the fader is moved and resoldered to prevent shorting to adjacent cards. Additionally any hot glue is removed and the wires are securely attached with foil tape. Ghost faders are not typically extremely smooth to begin with, but we have found a special cleaning and lube process that makes them as silky as possible. The fader mods do not affect the audio, they only improve the reliability and feel. Ask about replacing faders with high quality P&G or TKD faders - we have found by moving a few small parts, we can make these fit like a glove.
-
All insert jacks are replaced with gold plated Neutrik jacks if needed.
-
After the refurb process is complete the console is reassembled and fully tested via oscilloscope waveform analysis and condenser mic "live" audio testing. All problems found are corrected.
-
Additionally, the power supply is tested and trimmed for maximum headroom specs. If you have the older PSM-series power supply, it is recommended to update your power supply as a first priority. The Soundcraft CPS275 power supply is approved, or we can build a custom Power House Power Supply for you.
-
All IC's in the audio path are replaced with the latest and most advanced compliment of op-amps available (Texas Instrument, Burr Brown, Analog Devices for example).
-
All the generic stock capacitors are replaced with ultra-low ESR, high performance capacitors.
